Golf Swing Fundamentals

Many people who are considering playing golf think that there is very little to the game. They are wrong. They get out on the course with their first set of clubs, thinking that this will be an easy game to play – only to find out that they have no control over their ball, and that they are even endangering others when their golf club goes flying through the air! Golf swing fundamentals are not hard to learn – but they must be learned if you want to play golf. There is a very specific science to golf swing fundamentals.

Golf combines fun with a little geometry. If you hated geometry in school, don’t worry, this isn’t hard. You know what a triangle is, right? Well, a triangle is the basis of all golf swings – whether you are driving the ball four hundred yards, or putting ten feet…success rests in a triangle.

When you line up your shot, your shoulders and your arms should form a perfect triangle. Grip your club, and act like you are lining up a shot….do you see the triangle? If not, something isn’t right. Adjust your arms and shoulders until you can see the triangle that they form. Making this triangle isn’t difficult – holding it through the shot is!

The key to holding that triangle throughout the shot is to not allow any slack in your wrists. Keep your wrists locked throughout the entire shot, and let the club do the work. Too often, people try to ‘push’ the ball by breaking their wrists when the club strikes the ball. This doesn’t work. Keep the wrists locked tightly – but don’t allow that tight lock to cause you to grip the club too tightly either!

It isn’t as easy as you thought it was…is it? Golf swing fundamentals take time, patience, and practice to learn. There is more to it than meets the eye when you are watching the pro’s on the television – those men and women have had years and years of steady practice, and they have perfected their swings until they simply cannot be perfected anymore – and they make it look very easy!
