The Mental Game ~ The Truth!

Hey, do you think you have a strong mental game? Think again! Check to see if any of these mental keys find ways of creeping into your head while playing, trust me almost of us suffer from them.

Fear

Are you ever scared of missing a four-footer for birdie? Or how about hitting your tee shot on the 1st hole? How often has the result of that shot been a good one? It’s sad, but true, everyone is afraid to fail. We have to start somewhere, here are some of the things to understand about fear. Your big muscles will freeze and your small muscles will speed up, this tends to lead to an out of sync swing. You get the feeling of butterflies in your stomach, become nervous and quick. Take your time with your pre-shot routine, focus on your target and goal, and you’ll be fine.

Doubt

You have to trust yourself, and your club selection. If you think you have the wrong club, you do not trust your swing; the result, won’t be pretty. It’s better to have faith in the wrong club than, not having faith in the right club. Figure out your shot, and trust it.

Mental Tension

In golf, you have to relax, and let things happen. Thinking too much is usually counter-productive. Or as it was said in Golf Digest ‘try hard not to try hard’. Golf is a very different game than any other sport, it’s tough to try harder to beat your opponent, you have to be steady and calm.
Golfer’s hit their best shots when they are calm and focused on their goals, not when they are tense and anxious. Remember this the next time your out in the wind and rain and your opponent stiff’s it to three feet.

Bad Thinking

Try to plan your rounds before they happen. Think about where you want to play the ball for the best chance at hitting the green, and where you want to avoid. By focusing on each shot beforehand, you can relax when it comes to game time. This is very important, otherwise you may overlook some important factor in a shot. Say for example you’re so focused on the right-hand water that you pull it left and out of bounds. To avoid this on your next game you have to analyze all the danger areas of the shot your about to play, not just the obvious ones.
